Rent the Runway: Do’s and Dont’s
Happy Tuesday, guys and gals! I’m still on an emotional high from a fun-filled whirlwind weekend that is a large tribute to this post. That, and I have yet another fabulous weekend planned with my love that involves my two favorite things: getting dressed up and seeing a live musical.
Spoiler: it’s Hello, Dolly!
This past weekend (cue Aunt Violet: ‘What is a week-end?’) D and I were invited to a ball put on by the Alabama Symphony Orchestra. It was an evening especially designed for the likes of me...champagne, bolstering string instruments, and dinner and dancing with new friends. Did I not mention getting to wear this gorgeous gown from my friends at Rent the Runway?
I’ve had an avid interest in the clothing rental company for a while. And it was one that I kept at a comfortable distance—partially because I wasn’t quite sure how it worked and largely because I never have a reason to wear an evening gown that doesn’t involve sitting in my senior prom dress eating pizza on my couch.
I’m writing about my experience to help any ladies that want an honest opinion on whether to use RTR (this is not a heartfelt ode to my alma mater) for any occasions you have coming up.
RTR offers so many wonderful monthly trials, subscriptions, and rental plans but I’ll just be touching on renting one gown for a special occasion in this post. Some helpful tips:
Order your gown at least two weeks from the date you need to wear it. This merely ensures that the style/size you want isn’t already in use for that time so you can reserve it. The app is extremely user friendly, so I highly suggest downloading it! Even if just to browse for fun. Also, RTR will work with you if you need to frantically move your reservation date up (speaking from experience!) I was able to change my delivery date by 10 days sooner and it was no problem. I didn’t have to worry about a thing—they took care of the shipping change at no cost!
Be THOROUGH in your rental researching. We love to try things new sometimes, right? A new shade, a new style, a new size (¿?¿?). Here me out ladies—RTR is not the time to make a gutsy move on a dress. You know your body type, your perfect size and what looks amazing on you. However, a rental gown is just that: a rental. It’s important to remember that the dress will be arriving one to two days before your event, so there are little options if something goes wrong or you aren’t happy with how it looks! When I was searching for that perfect gown, I saved maybe 15 styles that caught my eye. Then I went back and thoroughly scanned every detail of the dress. Look at real pictures of women who have rented the gowns and see what you like/don’t like about how it looks on a real person!
Have fun! The lovely thing about RTR is that these dresses come pre-owned, so you don’t have to worry if you spill a little wine or muddy up the hem on it during your fun night out. Insurance and dry cleaning are included in the cost, so you can let loose! Luckily, RTR sends you TWO dresses, one completely free, so that you don’t have to worry about ordering the wrong size. Worried that it may be a little tight? Simply request the next size up for your second gown and you’re in for a stress free occasion.
Beware of wrinkles. I was so excited to receive my dress(es) in the mail. They came in an official RTR cloth garment bag that surprisingly fit two floor length gowns! The only downside? They were nice and wrinkled up. My advice if you don’t have an ironing board or steam cleaner at home, is to consider that before renting your dress! It will inevitably come (carefully) stuffed in a bag, so make plans to de-wrinkle it before your event.
If you’re wondering, my gown was only $50, y’all! I’m so glad I requested the second gown in a different size, because I ended up having to wear the next size up (bloating is a harsh reality!). My only complaint about the dress is that the fabric was too tight in some places and far too loose in others. Honestly, this could be attributed to my body type or many other things, so it was a discomfort that I could overlook. Everything else about my experience with Rent the Runway was so pleasing, I would do it all over again in a heartbeat!
My exact gown is the Royal Jennifer Dress by Fame and Partners.
