The Textured Look

Honesty hour — it took me about 30 minutes to finally start writing this post because I just could not think of where or how I wanted to begin. Sometimes it’s so easy to jump into, and other times I get severe writers block. Ever since I began putting pen to paper (almost 18 years or so ago..) I’ve struggled with writing because I truly am the biggest perfectionist when it comes to my passion. Even more so when my passion now includes combining my two great loves—fashion and writing! With all of that being said, and 30 minutes later....let’s take a closer look at what I’m calling “The Textured Look”...

What comes to mind when you think of the word texture ? Most would claim the sensory act of touching or feeling something and describing its texture as soft, rough, bumpy, smooth, etc. Texture in the fashion industry is what breeds the most creative pieces, in my opinion. It brings life and motion to an outfit, whether it’s alone or complimented with other textured pieces. So why am I telling you this?

Because texture is going to elevate your sense of style and disrupt your daily fashion routine.

Some of my favorite ways to add texture to any outfit you could throw on:

  • Feathers
  • Ruffles
  • Silk
  • Bejeweled
  • Pleats
  • Fur
  • Tweed
  • Leather

Texture might seem synonymous with types of fabric, but the two are distinctly different. As you’ll see below, the textures I’ve combined mellow the staple pieces, and highlight the fluidity of the outfit as a whole:

H&M Navy Culottes   The most gorgeous midnight blue hue, and the perfect fit for petite styles. These high-waisted, wide leg culottes are truly a show-stopper (I get so many compliments each time I wear them!). Keep scrolling for more detailed pictures that highlight the dot pattern. The built in belt helps to cinch the waist and create an ultra flattering look. These beauties will get worn all throughout the holidays for sure!

Forever 21 Classic Striped Body Suit   Stop what you’re doing (well, keep reading this post of course!) and scoop up this body suit immediately. It’s super soft material and classic stripes make it the ultimate layering piece for your wardrobe this winter. Expect to see this one many, many times until the 70 degree weather returns!

A New Day Green Tweed Jacket  It took me about 2.4 seconds of glancing in this jacket’s general direction before I plucked it off the rack and took it home with me. A beautiful olive green, this tweed jacket’s fit is structured and weighted—perfect for a cool evening or brisk winter day. The rolled sleeves add a much needed pop of red (with navy as well to compliment the culottes). I chose this particular jacket to pair with my slacks because the two textures juxtapose each other in a way that works. Fashion is about combining pieces that push the envelope in order to redefine the envelope.

Keep scrolling to see how I wore the jacket multiple ways depending on the weather and the look you are wanting to achieve!
